We were invited to create a pied a terre in what had been the former servants quarters of a Grade 2 listed house near Hyde Park. Facing East to west, the property benefited from a good amount of daylight for a lower ground property, with a small garden to the rear and an internal courtyard. The house had been converted into flats in the early 1990’s and had internally lost any visible period details.
Through the pre app process with Westminster Council we negotiated the opening up internally of the property by removing a small enclosed kitchen, with some amendments to the flow and layout of the space to create two en-suite bathrooms and a guest wc, alongside maximizing storage. We also proposed to bring the kitchen into the heart of the property, adjacent to the courtyard, moving the living areas to the rear to help join the indoor and outdoor living spaces. The structural arrangement of the extensions of various ages above the rear of the property, including a floating bay window called for a complex structural design to simplify and rationalise the plan and remove nib walls and columns in order to open up the spaces fully.
The material choices throughout were all natural with pale walls, a characterful oak floor, and marble in the kitchen, bathrooms and steam shower. The kitchen is a custom joinery design using quarter sawn oak with walnut detailing. The kitchen is complimented with midcentury pieces of furniture including Hans Wegner chairs and a Robin Day Sofa.
