We were asked by the artists Rob and Nicky Carter to reimagine their mews house in Paddington. The main part of the brief was to completely transform their upper floors, removing earlier additions, to widen the rear extension and create a generous space for entertaining and the enjoyment of their diverse and colourful collection of art. We created distinct areas to dwell in, maximising the footprint of the mews property.

The former glazed extension, which suffered from overheating in the summer and loss of heat in the winter, has been replaced with a wider more solid volume, that allows for greater wallspace for art, as well as toplit natural lighting throughout. The lower eaves of the front and rear pitched roof now house their extensive library of art books, allowing three living space, two in each wing and a central space with the entrance from the dramatic round staircase that dominates the house echoed by a large curving Italian sofa.

The larger width at the rear of the house connects to the original retained frontage, which originally housed a hayloft. This narrow space has now been used to create a beautiful home bar, a backdrop to the rest of the room.

The bathrooms were completely renovating creating a luxurious oasis of calm in keeping with the heritage of the property.

At ground floor level a number of simple interventions allowed for a new guest bathroom filled with art- an art gallery in its own right, as well as a new utility room and kitchen orientation.

The incoming daylight has been optimized throughout to benefit the hanging of their art, filling the home with colour and character.
